Dear Song Bai (Junior Brother Ling Ye):

I was so excited to hear you would be transferring to our school that I had to sit down right away and write this letter. I’ve wanted the chance to convey my feelings to you in person ever since the first moment I saw Senior Brother Gao Sheng cruelly oppress Ling Ye over and over, only for Ling Ye to struggle to stand and still defy him in the end. It was so cool, I instantly fell in love with the characters of Ling Ye and his cruel senior brother.

Please, you have to get together with Senior Brother Gao Sheng! ❤ ❤ ❤

The two of you are perfect for each other!!! Senior Brother Gao Sheng is the only one worthy of Ling Ye in all of ❮Apocalypse War❯!!!

The only one worthy of Ling Ye

“Ling Ye!—er, I mean—Fellow...fellow student Song Bai!”

Song Shuhang looked up in surprise, as did Senior White, who sat next to him on the bench.

The two of them had been taking this time between classes to chat about a few things. They had also chatted quite a bit during class—although Senior White had been keen to experience the life of a student, he was already growing bored with it—but chatting out loud rather than through secret sound transmission just held a different feeling.

Unfortunately, the popularity of ❮Apocalypse War❯ combined with Senior White’s natural charm meant it was nearly impossible for them to spend time together without being swarmed by requests for autographs, selfies, and even for them to act out parts of the movie together.

Especially that part at the beginning when Senior Brother Gao Sheng ruthlessly beat the hero Ling Ye over and over.

It was the most iconic part of the movie, so of course it was the most requested part to act out, but Song Shuhang had grown tired of hearing about it a long, long, long time ago.

Anyway, it was only because Senior White had cast a small technique that subtly encouraged anyone walking by to avoid them and walk the other way, that they were able to be carefree like this and hang out together on a bench in the middle of campus.

But now it turned out someone was able to resist that small technique enough to bother them anyway?

Standing in front of them was a pretty girl with a petite build who wore her hair in a ponytail. She held something tightly clutched against her chest as she glanced anxiously between the two of them.

Song Shuhang frowned slightly. He vaguely recognized her as a fellow student of Jiangnan University, but she was a year older than he was and wasn’t even in the same department—though he initial use of the name “Ling Ye” did clear up why she had sought them out.

But he was pretty sure he recognized her for some other reason, too...

Senior White tilted his head curiously. “Yes? Did you need something?”

For a moment, the petite girl looked like she was about to faint. A deep blush stained her cheeks. She kept glancing over at Song Shuhang for some reason.

Then finally, she mustered up all of her courage and thrust the object in her hand at Senior White.

“Please, accept this letter and let it convey my feelings!” she declared, voice steady despite her obvious nerves.

Song Shuhang stared blankly. Now, where had he heard words like that before...?

“Fuck!” He couldn’t help swearing loudly.

Now he remembered! Wasn’t his that same girl who had given him that “love letter” a while ago?

Song Shuhang dove for the letter.

He couldn’t let Senior White read that—!

But Senior White was too fast. He took the letter from the girl’s hand a second before Song Shuhang could reach it, and then it was too late.

Song Shuhang’s fingers scrabbled at the edge of the envelope, but nothing was going to knock it out of Senior White’s tight grip now.

“Thank you?” said Senior White.

The petite girl flashed Song Shuhang a look full of triumph. Then she bowed to Senior White and dashed off, her face still bright red.

Senior White watched her go, looking more puzzled than ever.

Song Shuhang said in a tight voice, “Senior White, you don’t have to open that. I can tell you what’s in it, so don’t even bother reading it, okay?”

Senior White looked at him curiously. “You already know what it says?”

“That girl gave me a letter like that a while ago,” Song Shuhang said. It’s better if you just rip it up and throw it away.”

“Hmm.” Senior White turned the envelope over in his hands, looking it over thoughtfully. “That girl seems to have gone to a lot of trouble to write it and give it to me. It wouldn’t be right to just throw it away. Is it so bad? What’s wrong with it?”

Song Shuhang said, “It’s just a load of nonsense. Trust me, there’s nothing to be gained by reading it. It’ll just ruin your day.”

Senior White glanced between him and the letter. He spent a long time looking down at it, as if he could read what was in it without opening it if he just tried hard enough.

In the end, he passed a finger over the top to slit it open with a flash of sword qi.

“Well, I don’t really mind reading a little nonsense,” Senior White said, and he took out the letter.

Song Shuhang groaned and slapped his hands over his face. He couldn’t watch.

Miss Fujoshi, you’ve really fucked me over this time!

A letter like that was sure to irritate Senior White.

And even though Song Shuhang wasn’t the one who had written the letter, and he’d made it clear he thought the contents were nonsense, Senior White’s unhappy feelings were sure to come down upon Song Shuhang’s head anyway.

After all, it wouldn’t be the first time that Senior White was irritated by someone else’s actions, but Song Shuhang was the one who suffered for it!

He would just have to hope that Senior White wouldn’t do anything too big while they were still at the school.

...Senior White was awfully quiet over there.

He had to have finished reading the letter by now, right? But he wasn’t saying anything, nor did it sound like he was tearing it up. Song Shuhang could only hear the faintest sound of the paper moving through Senior White’s slender fingers. And his breathing...

...It didn’t sound like he was breathing. Was he holding his breath? Was he that mad?

Song Shuhang was tempted to look. Maybe they could make fun of the letter together, and Senior White wouldn’t be so mad in the end.

But at least at the moment, he could claim ignorance of the letter’s contents—other than it being similar to the one he’d gotten—and that might be the only thing that saved him from certain death in the end. He kept his hands firmly over his eyes.

The paper rustled again, and Senior White look in a breath.

“You said you received a letter like this as well?”

Song Shuhang frowned behind his hands. Senior White sounded strangely calm...

That was usually a bad sign.

He nodded and said, “She and her friend cornered me not long after school started. They found me even though I was using that presence-concealing talisman from Senior Scholar Star.”

Senior White made a slight noise of interest at that but didn’t say anything else about it.

“And you’re sure the contents were similar to this?” Senior White asked in a quiet voice.

Song Shuhang replied, “Well, I can’t be sure...but since it’s the same girl, I think I can guess.” He took a breath and decided to risk it. “It’s about Gao Sheng and Ling Ye, right?”

Senior White said, “Mm-hmm, I think you have a good idea of what’s in here.”

Then he said

nothing

else,

for what

felt

like

an

eternity.

“Well, some of this is certainly a bit...much to put in a letter to a stranger, but she did say one thing I agree with.” Senior White’s hand landed lightly on his knee, and he said softly, “Shuhang, look at me.”

Song Shuhang was so startled that he did, instantly. He dropped his hands from his face and whipped his head around to stared at Senior White—

—only for his lips to collide with Senior White’s, because Senior White had already leaned in to kiss him.

This time, Song Shuhang was so startled that he froze. He stared, wide-eyed like a deer, at Senior White’s long eyelashes and lovely jade skin right in front of his face.

Touching his face.

Their lips were touching. He was kissing Senior White—no, Senior White was the one kissing him

Somewhere nearby, he heard someone squeal and whisper excitedly, “I knew it! I knew it~!”

Song Shuhang’s heart pounded wildly in his chest. He didn’t know what to do.

What—

What was happening—?!?!?!

Senior White pulled away again. Song Shuhang stayed right where he was, frozen in place.

He thought he might pass out. He was pretty sure he’d forgotten how to breathe.

His tongue briefly darted out across his lips. They felt oddly...tingly. And exposed.

“What—”

His voice came out as a croak. Song Shuhang swallowed heavily and tried again.

“What did she say?!”

Senior White was quiet for another long moment, during which he watched Song Shuhang closely. The expression on his face was gentle, but it was impossible to tell what he might be thinking.

But it seemed he found whatever it was he was looking for. He suddenly smiled (and didn’t that just cause Song Shuhang’s heart to flutter all over again), and his hand on Song Shuhang’s knee tightened ever so slightly.

Before, it would have been easy for Song Shuhang to break free of it if he’d wanted to, but now he wasn’t so sure.

Senior White replied, “That Senior Brother Gao Sheng is the only one worthy of Ling Ye.”

Then he leaned in and kissed Song Shuhang again.

This time, Song Shuhang was somewhat prepared for it, so the kiss itself didn’t startle him so much.

No, it was the confession right before it that had him sitting frozen in his seat.

That was a confession...wasn’t it???

Of course it was! Even a child would have known what that meant!

No wonder Senior White didn’t seem upset about the letter. Perhaps the way it was written was a bit strange, but he already agreed with the sentiments at the heart of it!

But Senior White was...

...well, he was Senior White. The celestial immortal banished to the human world. Anyone would have been lucky to have him, and he definitely could have dated anyone he wanted to. And he really wanted—

He really thought...Song Shuhang was the only one—

Song Shuhang’s eyes slipped closed, and faint noise escaped his throat before he could stop it.

To be honest, Song Shuhang had never even considered it.

At least, not...

...not seriously.

Other people kept bringing up the possibility, and he’d brushed them all off.

But now that he was here...

Senior White pressed closer. The hand resting on Song Shuhang’s knee had some weight to it now.

Song Shuhang reached out as well. He wasn’t really sure what he was reaching for, but soon his fingers brushed against the thin fabric of Senior White’s sleeve, and he grabbed onto it.

Senior White made a small noise of his own that sent shivers right down Song Shuhang’s spine.

Now that he was here...

It was pretty nice, actually.

It wasn’t anything like his first kiss, which—no, the less said about that, the better.

Senior White’s lips were warm and soft and...well, prefect. There really wasn’t a better word to describe it. They were parted ever so slightly, and Song Shuhang could feel the damp heat of the inside of his mouth against his own lips, but it didn’t seem like Senior White was going to try to take it any further than that yet.

The pressure against his lips was firm but gentle, inviting but undemanding. Song Shuhang could have rejected the kiss and pulled away anytime he wanted.

Before today—before five minutes ago, even—he would have thought that was exactly what he’d do if something like this ever happened.

But now...

...he didn’t think he wanted to do that anymore.

No, he was sure he didn’t want that. It wasn’t shock keeping him here anymore. He wanted Senior White to keep kissing him.

In fact...

...he thought he wouldn’t mind if...

Song Shuhang experimentally flicked his tongue out against Senior White’s lips. Another shiver ran down his spine at the feeling, and he pressed even closer to Senior White.

Oh...he could definitely go further than this—

But although Senior White’s lips parted a little more, and he shifted his head to accommodate Song Shuhang better, and his hand was gripping Song Shuhang’s knee so hard it was sure to leave bruises...he still didn’t try to deepen the kiss. It was almost like he was holding himself back or something—

The paper in Senior White’s other hand crinkled, and Song Shuhang’s whole body stiffened.

He suddenly remembered—they were still sitting on a bench in the middle of the campus! Although Senior White had activated that small technique, it only encouraged people to leave them alone. It didn’t actually make them invisible!

Song Shuhang abruptly shoved at Senior White’s chest and threw himself backward at the same time. He couldn’t go very far, but at least they weren’t kissing anymore.

Senior White frowned a little as he sat back. “Shuhang? Is something wrong?”

“Cough, Senior White, we’re still in public...” Song Shuhang said. Now that he had remembered where they were, his face was rapidly growing hot. “Beside, it should almost be time for class to start again...”

“Oh, you’re right.”

Senior White finally took his hand away from Song Shuhang’s knee in order to carefully fold up the letter and tuck it away.

Song Shuhang brushed his fingers over the spot without really thinking about it.

It felt cold without Senior White’s hand there...

He blinked, and suddenly Senior White’s hand was there again. His fingers curled around Song Shuhang’s hand, and he gave it a light squeeze.

“In that case, shall we continue this discussion at home after class is over for the day?” Senior White said.

Song Shuhang’s face felt hot all over again. He could think of a lot of directions this “discussion” could go in once they were back in the privacy of Medicine Master’s building.

Also, hearing Senior White call it “home” so casually...

“Yeah.” Song Shuhang took in a deep breath, and he leaned over to kiss the corner of Senior White’s mouth. “We’ll continue it at home.”

The smile that blossomed on Senior White’s face nearly took him out.

It filled his heart with scary thoughts, like “if Senior White could smile at me like that for the rest of our lives, I could die happy.”

Except those thoughts weren’t so scary anymore. Not now that he knew how wonderful it actually was to kiss Senior White and to know he was the reason for that beautiful smile.

Senior White brought their joined hands up to his lips to kiss the back of Song Shuhang’s knuckles. Then he got to his feet and tugged Song Shuhang up as well.

“Okay! Then let’s get back to class!” Senior White declared, and he set off like he thought getting there faster would mean the class would end faster too.

Song Shuhang stumbled along after him, pulled along by their joined hands. Once, he opened his mouth to say that maybe they shouldn’t walk around holding hands in public either, but he closed it again without saying anything.

It made Senior White happy to do it, so it was fine. In fact, once he was caught up, Song Shuhang adjusted their hands so their fingers were laced together instead. The delighted smile Senior White flashed him made it all worth it.

If it makes Senior White happy, it’s worth it.
